‘Snow Painting’’ by Yücel Dönmez
Continuing his work in the city of Chicago in the United States since 1980, Yücel Dönmez has realized a ‘Snow Painting’’ in the park next to Chicago’’s famous art museum, The Art Institute, on an area measuring 2000 square metres. Dönmez underwent his artwork, in the park while around 200 000 people looked on, with permission from the museum. The ‘Snow Painting’’ was broadcast across the US on national television networks and radio stations.
Yücel Dönmez puts his work under the title of ‘installation art’’, and says, “When I produced my first piece of this type of art, which I called ‘Nature Installation’’, there were no more than seven people in the world who were working on natural ‘canvases’’, and none of them described what they were doing as ‘organisation’’. This name began to be employed more in the 80s. In other words, what I was doing as a Turkish artist in the 70s became popular in the 90s, and renamed by the West. Now I am struggling to do is emphasise the importance of Turkey in the forming of this art form.”
