Painter Yücel Dönmez’’ tableaux reflect the Deepism movement
Turkish painter living in the United States, Yücel Dönmez, has staged an exhibition in Istanbul. Living in both Istanbul and Chicago, Dönmez exhibited his art work reflecting the art of depth, Deepism, at the Antik Art Gallery between 9th-30th March 2005.
Lending his signature to many important exhibitions in the U.S. and following his 1987 exhibition at The Art Institute of Chicago, one of the three most important art museums in the U.S., Dönmez appeared on national television channel, WGN, where he was given the title, ‘Chicago’’s Very Own’’ by the channel. Using his own technique, he creates his paintings, also using traditional Turkish art forms such as hat (Ottoman calligraphy), ebru (marbling),) and süsleme (ornamentation) as a point of origin for his work.
Chicago Tribune’’s Art Critic, Alan Artner, comments on Yücel Dönmez’’ work; “When I look at his paintings I cannot see the work of another master painter nor do I feel an air of the West. Dönmez has created an entirely original and novel artistic movement in the world of contemporary art, in synthesising his own culture with contemporary art of the West.”
The artist’’s tableaux are to continue to be displayed in his studio in Istanbul from 1st-20th April 2005.
